Stefan first meets Lucy when she accidentally injures herself and the Jingle Ball and he helps tend to her. While Lucy knows who he is and what him being in her small hometown means they still to have a special moment. Lucy knows that Stefan’s show is in town to fix up the other bar in town and that puts her own bar in trouble, so she runs away from their one special moment. Stefan and Lucy have a chemistry and fight it throughout the book but they both neither want to be the one to give in, so this gives us a lot of cute banter. I loved the back and forth they had and the story all together was super cute.… (más)

*This is a review of Playing By Heart by Sylvie Stewart - part of the Holiday Heart-On Anthology.

Cute and sweet
5 stars

I’m a big fan of Sylvie Stewart - she’s great at filling her stories with a combination of comedy and likeable, relatable characters. While this is the first short story of hers I’ve read - she still manages to make it everything I hoped and expected. But that’s not to say it didn’t leave me wanting more - but in the best possible way.

At a Christmas in July pet pageant (I mean, why the hell not?) Kat luck turns around when her crush turns up with his adorable dog. Better yet, he’s in a bind and the only one who can help him out, is Kat! And cue the music!

I liked both our characters instantly and they have the cutest chemistry. It’s quite nice to read a story with such innocent smittenness. It’s not that the story is innocent (although there’s only kissing), it’s just that they’re so totally adorable that it feels fresh.

For such a short story, I still definitely believed in their connection. Of course I wanted more. And of course I wish it was longer. But I was sucked in immediately and was left satisfied and with a smile on my face. I couldn’t ask for much more.

I loved this story. Evie and Lincoln got divorced, not because they fell out of love, but because they drifted apart; now she needs a partner for her wedding business and he wants a job. This is full of fun, with bridezillas and teasing brothers, as well as the gradual process of the two main characters realising how they truly feel.

With a wonderful title pun - something I note St. John Brown excels in - this is a terrific tale of Bea, recently unengaged, and Jasper, her best friend's brother with whom she has previously been intimate. Set in the Lake District, in a castle no less, there is humour and angst a-plenty. Great fun! I enjoyed it. Plus there's a Christmas novella at the end.
