- Cecilia Lucy Brightwell was born at Thorpe, near Norwich, England, the eldest child of Thomas Brightwell and his first wife, Mary Snell. Her father was a nonconformist lawyer and scientist who served as mayor of Norwich in 1837.
She studied etching and became a skilful copyist of etchings by Old Masters, including Rembrandt and Dürer. She produced the illustrations for her father's 1848 book Sketch of a Fauna Infusoria for East Norfolk. Her own writings, many of which were published by the Religious Tract Society, were mainly short biographies intended for the improvement of young minds. Her most important book was her first, Memorials of the Life of Amelia Opie (1854).
