This is a history of the Continental Navy (predecessor to the U.S. Navy) during the American Revolution. 'This book is about three captains of the Continental Navy: Lambert Wickes, Gustavus Conyngham, and John Paul Jones.' This book has numerous side articles and a glossary.
Wickes used French ports as bases for commerce raiding, facing legal and bureaucratic obstacles.
Conyngham cruised against British commerce, which caused more British ships to be used for escort duty.
Jones attacked shipping and shore installations.
It is well written and well illustrated with maps.
Positives:
The side articles were very much enjoyed.
It addresses the good and the bad of the captains. I believe it is honest and objective.
Negatives:
The sillouttes of the sailing ships have no scale, tonnage, armaments, etc. But they are better than nothing.… (más)
