One of the better books about how to help a child with autism. It was written about 20 years ago but I haven't found anything else comparable.
Her main premise is that stress overwhelms the person with ASD. I am so impressed with her description of the gentle techniques used for helping the many people who have come to her for help.
Judith, born in 1936, had autism at a time when few people (especially not girls) were diagnosed, and there were few treatments available. Her parents allowed her weird behaviors which were her way of making sense of the world, and that was her saving grace. She later studied neurology & researched explanations for what was going on. This book aims to look into the impetus behind autistic behaviours and weave the various threads of autism into a "makes sense" theory, hard won through personal experience and decades of study. The book looks into neuroscientific research, explanations of developmental processes and clinical outcomes as to the probable causes of autism.
