The Writers & Artists Yearbook has been an excellent resource for over 100 years now and the 2009 edition is no different. Being an aspiring writer with an artist girlfriend, this book is rarely on our shelf long before one of us takes it down to find an address for a magazine, a website of an author or just to read one of the inspiring articles by some superb names such as Neil Gaiman, Bernard Cornwell, Terry Pratchett and JK Rowling (although Rowlings article is a bit short and feels somewhat forced.)

Although it is handy for artists, it really is more of a writers yearbook with some extra bits added on for artists, but either way it’s certainly worth a read.

The difficulty might come not when reading it but when, overawed by the occasion, one attempted to put its precepts into practice. Georgette Heyer and PG Wodehouse include incidental instruction on the same subject but in a lighter-hearted and less didactic fashion… (más)

It was rather fun visiting Scotland with a guide well over a century out-of-date. The roads in the Highlands have improved drastically, but sadly, amenities such as the Inverness-Fort Augustus excursion steamer no longer exist and livery stables are impossible to find. However, many entries, such as Castle Cawdor, are entirely accurate. Memorable advice: if the publican tries to charge you more than 2d for a wee dram, you're being cheated.
