I've read [The House at Baker Street] by [Michelle Birkby]. Mrs. Hudson and Mary Watson decide to help a young woman Sherlock Holmes turned away. Told in Mrs. Hudson's voice, it has the same feel as the original books, is well written, and includes help for the two from the Irregulars. I approached it with some trepidation but it was very good.
Mary Watson and Mrs Hudson team together to investigate a blackmailed that is driving some people to suicide. He seems to revel in destroying lives. When they investigate it becomes more involved and they keep finding more and more victims. The danger ramps up as they get closer to the truth. Written from Mrs Hudson's perspective this is an interesting twist on the tales.
While browsing my city's public library, I found this book. I read the author's note and was intrigued to read. So I picked the book and enjoyed it. The truth I haven't read the whole stories of Sherlock Holmes, but you can read The House at Baker Street without reading the original one. Both Mrs. Hudson and Mary Watson are smart ladies that can do an investigation or two the way Sherlock Holmes does. It is funny to see Sherlock Holmes as a secondary character. While you are reading, you can feel the Victorian London ambiance. The mystery is quite engaging, the setting is believable, and most importantly, Mrs. Hudson's voice is easy to follow.… (más)
