A good coming of age story. Alyx is an intersexual, neither a boy nor a girl. Her parents raise her as a boy. But she gets bullied and beat up. After her dad dies, and she gets pummeled once again, Alyx and her mom decide to move to Milwaukee and have a fresh start. She joins the basketball team. Enter the mean girl, Pepper. This is a good book giving lessons of being true to who you are and how to deal with people who bully. A good book to have in a high school library.

I had my doubts about reading a book where the point-of-view is second-person present tense, but Ms. Birdsall dispelled those doubts in about two pages. The protagonist's (May) voice came through loud and clear. Tension ratcheted up gradually and inevitably, resulting in a climatic finish that was logical and satisfying.

The prose was simple and direct, accurately capturing thoughts and feelings of a young girl as she grew to high school age, but packed with emotion. Each character was well drawn, adding their own tension to the drama as well as fully fleshing out a dysfunctional family dynamic.

Well worth a reader's time and money.
