I liked the first Bubba book enough that I bought a collection of several others. These books aren't ever going to win a Pulitzer Prize but they are fun. The characters are eccentric and well-drawn, the plots are telegraphed just well enough that you feel particularly smart when you figure something out and the humor is wonderful. Just a very refreshing change of pace from my usual fare.

Just a good ole boy, never meaning no harm

When he is found staring down at the dead body of his ex fi-en-ce, Bubba is shore (sic) in a whole tub of trouble. With the help of the pretty new female deputy Bubba sets out to discover just who is trying to frame him for murder and who is behind the mysterious break ins at the ramshackle mansion he calls home in Texas.

With a likeable lead character and a supporting cast of quirky townspeople this is a nice humorous murder mystery that kept me reading late into the night to get to the bottom of Bubba’s predicament.

Well worth a read

I loved this book. It really was a fun read. Bubba works as a mechanic (and yes he's of large build as per the cliche but he's definitely nothing of the sort). He namely works the night shift and after a shocking night when he had to try to use the cash register (due to the overnight clerk quitting rather than showing up for his shift) he comes home to find a dead woman on his lawn.

But not just any dead woman. It's his ex-girlfriend, the one who Bubba found in bed with another man so he broke that man's arm (who just happened to be his commanding officer so there went his army career) so not unsurprisingly Bubba's the prime suspect. And the evidence just keeps piling up around him.

So Bubba investigates on his own account.

This book has a joyful air about it (and I positively giggled at Bubba's dream in Chapter 15) that really makes it a pleasure to read.

I absolutely loved this book. I got it as a kindle freebie a few years ago, but only recently read it because a lot of the free books I've gotten that way are complete trash, but C.L. Bevill's strategy of getting you hooked on the characters and wanting more certainly worked in my case. Although the Texas stereotypes are laid on a little bit (A LOT) thick at times, it didn't hurt my enjoyment. Just suspend your disbelief and get to know Bubba, Miz Demetrice and Precious as they try to get Bubba off the hook for a wrongful murder accusation. I didn't think I was going to like Bubba all that much after reading the first couple of chapters, but he quickly won me over with his southern charm. His mother, Miz Demetrice, is (as we say in the south) a hoot and a half. And who wouldn't fall in love with Precious the basset hound? Tolstoy it ain't. But if you're in the mood for a quick, quirky mystery with engaging characters, go for it!!… (más)
