Elizabeth Berridge was born in London on December 3, 1919. In 1945, her first two novels, The Story of Stanley Brent and The House of Defence, were published. Her other works include Selected Stories, Be Clean, Be Tidy, Upon Several Occasions, Sing Me Who You Are, People at Play, Touch and Go, and mostrar más Family Matters. Across the Common won the 1964 Yorkshire Post Novel of the Year Award. She also wrote short stories for numerous publications including Cornhill, Winter's Tales, London Magazine, and New Writing. For 25 years she reviewed novels for the Daily Telegraph, the Spectator, the Literary Review and the Tablet. She also served as a judge for a number of literary prizes. - Elizabeth Berridge was born in London to an English-Welsh family. She was educated in London and attended a school in Geneva, Switzerland, for a a year. She then worked at the Bank of England and a photo news agency. In 1940, she married Reginald Moore, founder and editor of the book series Modern Reading, with whom she would have two children. Elizabeth published her first short story in 1941. Two years later, the family moved to a remote house in Wales to escape the London Blitz of World War II. There she wrote more short stories that were published in a collection called Selected Stories in 1947; they were later reprinted by Persephone Books in 2000 as Tell It to a Stranger. The family returned to London in 1951. Although she continued to produce short stories, Elizabeth also published nine novels, beginning with The Story of Stanley Brent (1945). The others included Across the Common (1964), which won the Yorkshire Post Award for Best Novel of the Year. She also published The Barretts at Hope End (1974), an edition of the early diary of Elizabeth Barrett Browning. She also reviewed fiction for the Daily Telegraph for 25 years as well as for the Spectator, the Literary Review, and the Tablet. She served as judge for a number of literary prizes, and was named a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Her last novel, Touch and Go (1995), was adapted as a radio drama by the BBC.
