Author and illustrator Berran had been to school in past years and left signed copies. Covers very bright and appealing so thought I would read for Junior school boys. Sam's family have relocated to the town of Agnath in the middle of the Australian outback. There are cows, trees, sand and piles of red dirt and old mines and no much else so Sam is bored out of his brain until another new kid called Jared moves in to town. Together Sam and Jared get up to all sorts of naughty and gross adventures.
It will appeal to Grade 5 and immature Year 8s. The text is interspersed with changes in font to provide emphasis and illustrations. Sam has an annoying baby sister called Yelly/Smelly/Jelly Melly and his mother has a Pomeranian dog that Sam refers to as Fluff Butt - both of which seem to just be poop machines.

I was going to read all in the series but I really struggled with this one - basically all the pets in town that come from a new pet store are running around during the day trashing houses while their owners are away - eating all the junk food. Sam and Jared are blamed for it so they decide to follow Fluff Butt and see what is really going on. It turns out the pet store owner is actually a french poodle who organizes the animals because they want to eat human food and are sick of eating pet food.

This book has a bad message in it - i.e. give your pets junk food ! That is so wrong! As a dog owner and passionate animal lover, I know you should never, ever give your dog chocolate!! And feeding pets human food leads to very poor digestion, obesity and many other problems. As a book designed for young kids it sends them the wrong message.

This is the 2nd book in the series and the shortest. In it, Sam clears the gunk between his toes and saves it in a box under his bed. It turns into a monster that reattaches itself to his feet. Sam and Jared try to get to the bottom of this by spying on the only successful farmer in the district - he sells bags of amazing manure to gardening companies. The boys notice that his cows seem super skinny though and not capable to producing any cow poo. They also see that there is some resemblance to the toe-jammed monster in old photos of the farm and sneak in to find out what is going on.

This book is just basically one big poop joke but it had a bit more of a plot than the first one. The ideas were good but the editing was, once again, poor and should have been tidied up to make it better. (I think this is a self published book.)

This is the first book in the series and the shortest. In it, Sam finds a tunnel under his father's shed. Will this tell him what happened to his dad who disappeared?

There are quite a few editing errors in this book - i.e - incorrect or repeated words. It is also pretty light on for plot and Sam seems to repeat himself a lot. I would be interested to see what the kids think of it.
