Abstract

New and valuable compositions are constantly being added the solo repertoire of the
trumpet. Regrettably, the busy high school instrumental music educator has little time to spend
seeking out new solo repertoire. The result is that students are frequently assigned the same
solos year after year with little or no consideration given to new compositions. The focus of this
project will be on contemporary solos containing frequent meter changes, non-functional
harmonies, and/or non-traditional scales. These compositional techniques have become
commonplace in modem high school level band music. More importantly, these works provide
numerous opportunities for technical and musical growth in the high school trumpet player. The
solos featured in this project are Timbuktu by Allen Vizzutti, "To J. S." from Eight Profiles by
Fisher Tull, the Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by Kent Kennan, Three Episodes by Joseph
Turrin, A Hymn for the Lost and the Living by Eric Ewazen, and A Sunday Excursion by Robert
