A charming, wholesome YA romance about living in Alaska in the 1880s. It's in the style of Christy or Mrs. Mike, so if you loved those, you'd probably like this. My elementary school reader recommended this book, and it ended up being an entertaining read.

Bell, Margaret E. Watch for a Tall White Sail. Morrow, 1948. 222p. Middle school
Florence Monroe, age 16, travels with her family to Southeast Alaska in 1887 to start a new life. Florence must help her family there as they run a salmon company. There she meets the dashing Beldon Craig, who becomes her fiancé. Narrative point of view telling a fast-paced sweet at times, but fairly stereotypical story, where the white older men are in charge and the women, children, and Natives must obey them. Theme is courage.
AK: Southeast AK, salmon, boats, fishing
Activity: Ask children what they think of the story. Did they like it? What do they think of the Monroe family? How does Florence act different than a 16 year old Alaskan girl of today? What do they think about how the Natives were described in the book? Does that seem right?
