Very interesting story! I picked up this book during our travels in the Western United States because we are familiar with the Ute Trail in Rocky Mountain National Park, and I like stories about women, particularly women who rise to recognition in a "man's" world. Chipeta certainly did that in her own, unassuming way. A surprise was the connection of her tribe with the Milk Creek Battlefield near Meeker, Colorado, which my husband and I have visited. The more I read, the more frustrated I get with the horrible way the Indians have been treated by the Whites and the U.S. Government.

This was an enlightening read.

Young Reader Reaction: Our child picked this because she had to read a biography for school. At first she read it with that "I don't like homework" attitude. But about a third of the way through the book (and after looking at lots of the pictures), she got into the story. By the end, she said it was very interesting and she was glad she picked it.

Adult Reader Reaction: What a fascinating book. This gave me a perspective about the gold rush that was totally new to me. When I think of the 1860s, I think of the Civil War, but clearly President Lincoln had lots of issues to deal with.

Pros: This is a well-told biography of life as a Native American from the 1840s to the early 1900s. Readers will come away awed by Chipeta and far more appreciative of Native American contributions to our history.

"The accompanying nurse assured the mothers that this was a famous and harmless visitor, while Chipeta cooed strange words to little ones that she could barely see.
"

The life of Chipeta (1843-1924) spans forty-four years beyond the death of husband Chief Ouray. By detailing her story, the author provides a greater glimpse into the region during those transformative years for Ute Indian society.
