"Thumps is a little pig who runs away to join a circus. There he learns all sorts of bright tricks and saves the day when an elephant goes on the rampage, by tying its trunk to a pole. Far fetched and too graceless to be convincing. The author's colored pictures in her characteristic heavily weighted style are of people and animals in typed poses and attitudes." - Kirkus Reviews

This is a story originally published in 1961 for the Weekly Reader Book Club. It is a story similar in nature to "Black Beauty", but less preachy, and with somewhat less content. Blitz is about 4 years old when he is sold and becomes a fire horse. An accident injures Blitz and his owner, and the horse is sold to help pay bills. Unfortunately, his new master is cruel. Will Blitz ever find a kind master again?

I read it in one 'sitting', and enjoyed it very much, with no reservations of recommending it. It is worth reading if you are an adult, young or otherwise, but especially if you like 'horse' stories.

PS: Thanks to bookel for helping me figure out the name of this book so I could read it again!

Moving story about a lonely, unwanted ranch horse and a displaced city boy who find each other. Beautiful black-and-white artwork. People often don't discern or value the unique specialness of others, especially if it is not readily apparent.
