I really did like this book, it was very sweet. If you have a very low tolerance for overly-stereotyped or optimistic books I might avoid it, but I think most people would love this book. It focuses on the life of one couple in a northern town.. including rivalries between towns, curling, fishing, practical jokes, anonymous holiday gifts, etc. Characters include the priest, the mountie, the handyman, etc. I felt the ending could have used a little work, but the book overall was really very nice.

I won this book through librarything.com member giveaway program. I requested the book as I grew up in a tiny northern town just south of the Yukon so the premise stuck with me. The characters and the pranks that the author tells, are for the most part quite funny, and they drew me back to my time growing up in a small town.I often think that those crazy situations would only happen in a small town. I would have loved to know more about the characters and the little town of Everet, YK. It also highlighted the sad moments that vibrate so profoundly through a small town. I will be passing this book onto those that I think will also appreciate it and I would recommend it.… (más)

I won this book through librarything.com early reviewers program. I loved the whole story . The frienship, the relationships, the kindness, and the pranks made this a great book to read. I loved the story of all these friends and their daily lives but the ending was sad and i hoped it would have ended differntly. this book is the perfect pebble.

When I started reading the book, it at first seemed as if it was a sort of episodic novel just detailing various stories about a small, isolated community in the Yukon.

I enjoyed the characters, who were well detailed and the humour was great. That on its own would have been enough for me to rate the book quite highly.

However as I neared the end of the book, I realised that it was a very insightful story about what it is like to live in a small, isolated community. It took me back 40 years to when I lived and worked in places like Blantyre, Malawi and Francistown, Botswana.
There communites formed of expats such as that often detailed in novels such as Out of Africa, etc.

From my own experiences, I was able to recognize many types of characters in the book similar to those I had known. I my case the curling rink and hotel were replaced by the country club, which was the setting for all the action. But we had just as many practical jokers, madcap spur-of-the-moment adventures, and heavy drinking nights as Susan describes. Our sports were concentrated on cricket, tennis and squash rather than curling but they also formed a very large part of daily life.

The only thing I found missing was the sexual shenanigans that people got up to and the problems those caused !

Thank you Susan for transporting me back to a world I lived in many years ago and have not thought of for a very long time. I am sure you must have lived in a similar type of closed community to be able to describe it so accurately.
