Nancie Atwell is the author of several books for teachers including Coming to Know: Writing to Learn in the Intermediate Grades; In the Middle: New Understandings About Writing, Reading, and Learning; and Side by Side: Essays on Teaching to Learn. Atwell learned and perfected her techniques as a teacher of eighth graders for twelve years. Really flexible lessons that I've used from high school age to primary school. Lots of great student examples and meaningful lesson prompts.
Nancie Atwell does a great job explaining how to practically set up a reading workshop. She includes forms to copy to help explain certain processes to students and gives examples of student writing to show teachers how the letter response - letter essays work in the classroom. I will definitely use some of her ideas this year in my reading classroom.
