A basic introduction to both concepts and issues which includes exercises to think through. Although needs supplementing in most areas, if you want a simple, accessible and not too academic introduction to the field then this (or Messer below) a good place to start.

Theology discussed in terms that are accessible to those who are not academics. Worth reading if nothing else for the author's small rant about training which consists of "shared ignorance".

If you are interested in the subject, and have a bit of of background in philosophy, this is THE book, imo. It covers all the major areas and asks the questions to get you thinking along interesting lines....
