This is an interesting collection of thoughts and reflections on living in a world with pain. Up front, Max tells us he has left many personal sections left in the tense they were written. For example, a section written in 2012 was left in present tense. While some may find that disorienting, I found it very genuine and raw. It also mirrored well with the "letter to my past self" section at the end. Complaints: the book is poorly formatted; sections chop off randomly, some sentences are jumbled. The content is also really jumpy and could use another round of editing to smooth the transitions. Not really a complaint, but, there is also a fair bit of background information the reader assumed to know about Nietzsche, Camus, and Kierkegaard. On the whole, the book is honest and emotionally charged book yet balanced with theological and philosophical rigor.
