As Quiz, a street urchin, defends her in her quest to clear her father’s name, the reader begins to understand the alternative society of Tarreton and the magic that makes it work. Political, social, and religious issues figure prominently as the friends try to catch a killer. An excellent choice for middle grade readers.
A satisfying sequel that just might be continued? Hope so!

I loved the multisensory descriptions in this book about a girl with synesthesia who has confessed to murdering a classmate.
"Dark chocolate, poured over velvet: that was how his voice tasted. I wanted him to follow me around and narrate the rest of my life." p 101
The main character's love interest is portrayed as nearly perfect and there's some sensuality I could have done without, which is why this didn't receive five stars.
It wasn't as suspenseful as I was expecting, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would!… (más)
