This is about a very bright, very optimistic 8-year-old boy who is a refugee from Nigeria to the U.S. due to Boko Haram violence. He has an optimistic view on the people around him in the U.S. And he is obsessed with chess and worked very hard on improving his skill. He won state championship of New York for the K-3 age group and was ranked at over 1500. I am very impressed with how smart he is and how firmly his views are rooted in positivity toward self and others. He will grow up to be an extraordinary man. This is a lovely, feel-good story of a gentle Nigerian family forced to face hardships, and leaning on their faith in God and one another. Tani's unbridled enthusiasm and optimism makes this book a joy to read.
