"I struggled on to Dymock next day but had dome some damage to my inside and arrived at the Gallows in a very poor way indeed. With Lascelles and Catherine I was back in the North again, no matter where we might be, and this was so throughout our lives. The Gallows was a delightful old cottage and Lascelles did much of his best work there. In that June of 1911 he read me the first part of The Sale of St Thomas that was published like 'Mary and the Bramble' in a little blue-coloured pamphlet. That poem was completed in 1930 and the dedication of part and (later) the whole to me has been and to the end of my life will be a source of extreme pleasure. ... And then, best of all, Lascelles brought me the proofs of The Sale of St. Thomas, the first part of which he had written as long ago as 1911 and the later parts only this year. He read the whole poem to me, the finest of all his dramatic poems, and then he showed me my own name at the beginning of it, and I felt like 'Lawrence of virtuous father, virtuous son', endowed by Milton with immortality."

Arthur Ransome, Autobiography (1976), pp. 143-144 (in 1911) and 337-338 (in 1930).
