Louise Elizabeth Gluck, 1943 - Louise Gluck was born April 22, 1943 in New York City, New York. She grew up on Long Island and attended Sarah Lawrence College and Columbia University, both in New York State. She is best known for her award winning collection entitled "The Wild Iris". After mostrar más graduation, Gluck began teaching poetry, accepting positions at various colleges and universities. In 1968, her first collection entitled "Firstborn" was published. Seven years later she published "The House on the Marshland", and in 1985, "The Triumph of Achilles" won the National Book Critics Circle Award for poetry. In 1993, she was an editor of The Best American Poetry anthology. Her last appointment was as Senior Lecturer in English at Williams College. Louise Gluck is considered one of the most gifted poets of her generation. Known for her well-crafted use of verse and meter, she first garnered attention with "Firstborn", a collection of poetry from 1968. Full of angry emotion and disturbing tone, her poetry deals with the horrible and painful. In 1985, "The Triumph of Achilles" was released to thunderous applause, gaining awards in every category. It received the National Book Circle Award, the Boston Globe Literary Press Award and the Poetry Society of America's Melville Kane Award. Gluck has received the Bollingen Prize in Poetry, the Lannas Literary Award for Poetry, fellowships from the Guggenheim and Rockefeller foundations and the National Endowments for the Arts. Her collection "Ararat", (1990) received the Rebekah Johnson Bobbett National Prize for Poetry. Other collections include "The Garden" and "The Wild Iris". The "Wild Iris", perhaps her most award winning collection acquired the highest honor possible in 1993, the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. It also received the Poetry Society of America's William Carlos Williams Award In 1994 she was named Poet Laureate of Vermont, and was elected as a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. Louise Glück was born in New York City and grew up on Long Island. She attended Sarah Lawrence College and Columbia University. Her first book of poetry, Firstborn, appeared in 1968. She's considered by many to be one of America's most talented contemporary poets. She won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1993 for her collection The Wild Iris. She teaches at Yale University, where she is the Rosencranz Writer-in-Residence.

TRAS la publicación de su poesía reunida en 2012, la poeta Louise Glück (Nueva York, 1943) ha seguido en Noche fiel y virtuosa (2014) el consejo de su colega Richard Siken de «jugar en el barro, solamente jugar en el barro». En el que es su último libro publicado antes de la concesión del Premio Nobel en 2020, Glück abandona las máscaras mitológicas de su obra anterior para mirar desde la vejez directamente al horizonte de la muerte —la propia, la de los seres queridos— en una serie de poemas (que incluye por primera vez poemas en prosa) en la que un sujeto lírico femenino, más o menos identificable con la poeta, se alterna con la voz de un alter ego masculino: un pintor que aborda el silencio y el lienzo en blanco del tramo final de su vida. La niñez y la vejez, la noche y el día, el pasado y el futuro, la realidad y la ficción, la blancura de la nieve y la oscuridad de los jardines, el rey Arturo y el psicoanálisis se unen en una circularidad de viajes, paseos y libros donde el sujeto despliega, con un tono onírico —«visiones oníricas medievales», las llamó un crítico—, su aceptación de la muerte, resignada, audaz y curiosa al mismo tiempo.… (más)

El pausado transcurrir de los días, con sus ritmos que parecen abolir el tiempo. La peculiar geometría de las calles que irradian desde la plaza central. El ciclo del cultivo y la cosecha, donde la muerte es simultáneamente cósmica y minúscula, donde el renacimiento es tan certero como el sol. El tempo de una existencia desplegada entre colinas, dolorosamente lejos del mar. Louise Glück condensa en Una vida de pueblo el día a día rural en Estados Unidos, con sus animales y habitantes, cuya juventud exuberante y subsecuente decadencia parecen hacer eco de la naturaleza que los rodea.
