Every year, millions of withdrawn little girls and chronically overwhelmed women go undiagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder because they don't fit the stereotypical profile: they're not fast-talking, hyperactive, or inattentive, and they are not male. Sari Solden's groundbreaking study reveals that ADHD affects just as many women as men, and that the resulting depression, disorganization, anxiety, and underachievement are also symptoms of ADHD. Newly revised and updated to reflect the latest clinical research, the book explores treatment and counseling options, and uses real-life case histories to examine the special challenges women with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) face, such as the shame of not fulfilling societal expectations. Included is a brand-new chapter on friendship for women with ADHD. Three empowering steps-restructuring one's life, renegotiating relationships, and redefining self-image-help women take control of their lives and enjoy success on their own terms.… (más)

I liked this book overall and found some sections very helpful, but I did find some of its ideas dated. I'm not sure if it's dated for being revised in 2005 or not...

For example, one of the screening criteria is about balancing chequebooks. I think this task is pretty irrelevant these days in North America, and I doubt many people under age 50 ever had to learn how to do it!

I thought there was a missed opportunity to talk about neurodiversity and especially ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), which, like ADHD PI, is often under-diagnosed or misdiagnosed, especially in women. It also has several overlapping symptoms with ADHD.

I wish this book approached at ADHD PI with a less genderized perspective. I expect ADHD PI is under-diagnosed and misdiagnosed across all genders, although it disproportionately affects women since it's the more common form found in women. There's also a lot of unnecessary heteronormative and traditional gender role ideas throughout the book.

I found it hard to keep the fictional bio stories straight throughout the book since they were spaced so far apart. Seems kind of ironic for a book about ADHD. ( )

Every woman who struggles with this disorder should read this book. The book talks quite a great deal about ADHD in general but also focuses on how women's lives are affected differently than the lives of men because of the different expectations on each gender. It was a great book to read. ( )

Excellent book for learning about ADHD, especially if you have the inattentive subtype. This book is particularly targeted to women who were not diagnosed until adulthood. Diagnosis this late in life is literally life-altering, as it suddenly reveals the reason for many of the woman's decisions and occurrences throughout life. Ms. Solde gives a detailed description of ADHD and the challenges it presents, and ends with suggestions and recommendations for someone with a recent diagnosis to reclaim control of their life. ( )

I dedicate this book with gratitude and love to my husband, Dean, who ventures boldly each day into the eye of the hurricane, where together we find calm and peace in the centre of the storm.

A note to the reader : I wanted to write this book...because it became clear to me through my work as a therapist that there are many women who have been struggling with serious unexplained and often mysterious difficulties their entire lives.
