Llegaron a Thalassa en la Magallanes, la última astronave de la Tierra. Sus tripulantes, testigos de la destrucción del sistema solar, transportaban a los restos de la humanidad sumidos en el sueño de la hibernación. Aunque planeaban hacer tan sólo una escala de reabastecimiento en ese mundo oceánico antes de proseguir su travesía de quinientos años hasta su destino final, para su sorpresa encontraron que una de las sondas sembradoras enviadas por la Tierra en un desesperado intento de preservar la vida humana en la galaxia había conseguido fructificar, creando en Thalassa una civilización casi utópica. ¿Cómo afectará la llegada de la Magallanes, con su aura trágica, a la feliz sociedad thalassana?
