Katz illuminates the interaction between humans and animals. Although he features his ever-faithful border collie Rose, Katz also includes revealing observations about Mother the murderous barn cat, Elvis the doughnut-loving steer, and his other dogs--Izzy, Lenore, and Pearl.

Soul of a Dog is like visiting a place you've been to before and catching up with old friends. The friends are the animals of Bedlam Farm and Jon's telling of their stories. Sad to read that he and Paula have separated. ( )

I liked this one just as much as I like all of Katz books. being as I have read most of them it is like taking the journey with Katz thru his life on the farm.. only this time not only thru his dogs' eyes, but other animals on the farm as well.

Even though Jon Katz is known for being a dog book author, this book is mostly about other animals in his life, and the relationships that he has with them and they occasionally have with each other. (there's a chicken that gets along with a donkey, for instance) He ponders the question of whether dogs have souls, or any other animal, for that matter. He Intersperses different philosophers and behavioral experts views on animal souls with the different stories and his own personal thoughts, in what I felt was a nice balance - not ever too heavy on his thoughts or the experts' ideas. A good read for commuting, as you can focus on one chapter/animal at a time, and it doesn't necessarily progress in a specific, linear fashion. ( )

Yay, I think this one's about Rose!

Well, it's a lot about Rose, but a lot about Jon's other farm animals, as well. It's great - we get to meet some of them, like Elvis and Mother, in greater detail than before, all as part of Jon's discussion about animals and souls. ( )

More news from Bedlam Farm, as Katz contemplates the question of whether animals have souls via Aristotle, Aquinas, a local minister (3 big "no" votes), and his own relationships with his extraordinary animals--Rose, his indispensible, all-business border collie; Izzy, his oh-so-different young border collie who goes with him on hospice visits; Lenore, his bundle-of-love black lab; Elvis, his 2000 lb steer, and others.
