I finished this and thought, "what a great book, I have to talk to someone about it!" I suppose that's the mark of a great story. This was funny and sad, and also uplifting. While not 'hilarious' as it is quoted on the back, it is humorous at moments. There seems to be a touch of magical realism because some of the situations the characters encounter seem so bizarre, but not the extent that I would give it that label. It is a story of adventure as the main character thinks she finds what she wants only to discover herself. A truly wonderful book. (The 2015 Big Read selection for the Wichita Public Library.) The story is slow more often than it moves, but when it moves, hang on. The back cover calls it "joyful," which is a bit of a stretch, but it has its gleeful moments. I'm half-seriously planning an analysis of Atomiko as Moses (the staff, you know). I would like to have understood a little more about the conditions that made the journey necessary. That element seemed glossed over, unserious, tossed in for the sake of moving the plot, rather than an actual problem facing Mexican communities. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

A young woman, Nayeli, 19, notices that her small town in Mexico has no men, so she decides to head to the US to bring back seven men to help populate her town. Her aunt Irma, newly elected mayor of the town, encourages her to go. Nayeli also plans to go to IL to find her father who left years earlier.
Nayeli sets off with a small group and heads north to San Diego. They encounter a cast of characters on the way, as well as the border patrol.
Nayeli grows up on this trip, and realizes that the boy she thought she loved, as well as her father, are not the men she expected them to be. ( )
