Far be it from me to second The Daily Telegraph, but indeed, it is "one of the most gloriously inventive and appealing comic-book debuts in years"! The art is attractive and necessary to the story, both in plot and tone. Though the last page hardly leaves any room for a sequel, I'd love to see one.

Imagine a slightly unhinged and downbeat Hercule Poirot winding up in a Hammett plot set in a wet and mundane England. If that sounds good then you'll probably enjoy this slightly old-fashioned feeling noir.

Not sure the device of the talking teabag adds much. It helps with exposition a bit, but feels like an early idea that was neither fully explored nor excised.

This is very atmospheric and enjoyable, and beautiful to boot. Not entirely successful and the plot felt more complex than it actually was, but still a very original and impressive debut.

This neo-noir graphic novel follows Britten and his sidekick Brülightly, a teabag, as they investigate a suicide at the behest of a doubtful widow. It uses cinematic-style art, hand lettering, and washed out colors to capture the world weary investigator as he discovers that some information is best left unknown. Witty but extremely sad at times, this is probably not for everyone. For me, I so wish it wasn’t a standalone. ( )

Ooit duwde een vriendin dit boek in mijn handen met 'neem maar mee'. Het stond in mijn kast te wachten als een onbekend pareltje. Eindelijk was ik nieuwsgierig genoeg om het te openen en begon te lezen. Daar hield ik pas mee op toen ik het uit had. Iets dat me niet vaak gebeurt bij graphic novels.

De tekenstijl, het verhaal, de personages, werkelijk alles vind ik prachtig aan dit boek.

Laat ik eerst met de twee hoofdpersonages beginnen, Britten en Brüglightly. Britten is een wat sobere, ingetogen detective bijgestaan door zijn maatje, Brüglightly, een theezakje. Ja, dat lees je goed, een theezakje is een hoofdpersonage zonder dat het cartoonesk wordt.

De tekeningen zijn allemaal levensecht waarbij de menselijke vormen wellicht ietsje stripachtiger zijn. Dit is ook al aan de tekening op de kaft te zien.
Het hele boek is bijna zwart-wit maar weer net niet omdat er soms een beetje kleur wordt gebruikt om de sfeer nog wat sterker te maken. Er zijn ook wisselingen van aquarelachtige taferelen naar gedetailleerde potloodtekeningen. Allemaal een feest voor het oog.

En dan het verhaal, een mysterie dat zich langzaam ontvouwt. Spannend opgebouwd en op een natuurlijke manier verlopend.

Ik kan niet anders dan alleen maar de loftrompet over dit meesterwerk steken. ( )
