I'm not crazy about Ted McKeever's artwork here, the grungy sort of style he has. Personally, I like a more clean realistic look than what you find here. But he tells a great story, so I don't mind that the art isn't my favorite. Transit is a tale of drama, both social and political. It focuses on Spud, a graffiti artist, along with a couple dark political figures and a couple would-be friends. In his afterward, McKeever writes "I had in me a story about a subway-dwelling graffiti artist who became involved in a sleazy political drama ... I felt it becoming something deeper...denser." And that it certainly did. Corruption and scandal, big guys vs. little guys, and underneath it all an artist trying to find his way. ( )

The collected Transit is a wonderful look inside the mind of Ted McKeever, one of the more interesting talents floating around on the edges of the mainstream comics scene. If this narrative is occasionally overblown and melodramatic, it nonetheless succeeds entirely based on McKeever's frequently stunning visuals - he's a highly original stylist, and the clear evolution of his technique over the six issues of Transit is a brilliant journey all by itself.
