One of the last 'the USSR conquers the USA and a heroic (blank) has to free our country' novels, as the genre disappeared a few years later. Focused entirely on the action/adventure side of things. Very typical, and not terribly good except as a curiosity. ( ) It is a scary book about the occupied US having fallen to the Soviets in unconditional surrender. It is a desperate attempt to find a doomsday weapon that had been built under Reagan, but never disclosed to the American people to gain American freedom once again. The last part of the book is set in Arizona.
"I, Martha Adams" may not be the suspense novel of the year, but it has enough to keep you enthralled for an afternoon in the hammock. Just bear in mind, though, if Jeane Kirkpatrick were to write a Harlequin, this might be it. Ploddingly earnest comic-book suspense--weighed down by stiff dialogue, hawkish rhetoric, and elaborate yet dubious speculation.
