On the 35th anniversary of the end of Dutch rule in Brazil (1630-54), an exhibition of the works of Albert Eckhout (1610-66) was displayed at the former residence of Johan Maurits, Prince of Nassau-Siegen and governor of Dutch Pernambuco (1637-44). During Maurits' governorship, Eckhout worked for him, recording indigenous peoples, fauna, and flora in drawings and paintings that became the major iconography of 17th-century Brazil. The extant 21 life-size paintings today belong to the Nationalmuseet in Copenhagen. They were all displayed in the Den Haag exhibition along with the related drawings now in Berlin collections. This major event is recorded in this book, with historical and artistic evaluations by various scholars. All the exhibition items are reproduced, as are related documents and pictures.
