Terri Clark's debut young adult novel is a fast-paced, thrilling read.

Trinity Michaels has the ability to dream walk. It is ability that she doesn't want as it often leads to her seeing the darker side of people and their secrets. The worst by far was dreaming of Kiri the day after her parents reported her missing. Trinity was able to help the police find her but it was too late - she had already been murdered. Her killer, Rafe Stevens, was sent to a mental institution instead of jail. Now Rafe has escaped and he has developed the ability to invade people's dreams and mix them with reality. He is after Trinity in her dreams and if he kills her in her dreams she will die for real. At least Trinity doesn't have to face the danger alone as she finds an unlikely ally in Dan Devlin, the son of the lawyer who kept Rafe Stevens out of jail.

Terri Clark writes fast paced action and witty dialog that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. The novel is dark and twisted while also containing humor and even some romance. Clark peppers the text with contemporary references that today's teens will easily relate to. Her characters are interesting and dynamic with solid motivations for their actions. While there is no word currently about future books starring Trinity, Clark certainly leaves the possibility open.

Trinity is a very unique girl with the ability to dream walk. Trinity doesn’t view this as a blessing; rather, she sees it as a curse. Because of this so-called “skill,” Trinity has to deal with a whole mess of everyone’s deep dark secrets that she’d rather not know. This has only affected her negatively, causing her to grow up faster than she wants to and be reluctant to make friends, not to mention making her like a freak. But there’s only one real thing that makes it the most difficult for Trinity to deal with her unwanted dreams: the fact that she knew a girl named Kiri was going to be murdered but couldn’t save her in time. The fact that she helped catch the murderer Rafe is no consolation for this. But now Trinity has far more important things to worry about, namely the fact that Rafe has escaped from the insane asylum he was wrongly placed in and is coming to kill Trinity – in her dreams. When she sleeps, nothing is sacred or safe, not even her own life.

Sleepless is a fast-paced and exciting debut from Terri Clark. There’s a perfect mix of mysticism, action, and even romance. Trinity was a funny and believable main character. While her school nickname “Goth Girl” didn’t seem completely fitting at all times despite the fact that Trinity had a preference for wearing dark colors, the rest of her character was very well-developed. I liked that Trinity could nearly always keep her head about her except when she was a little too close to a particularly hot guy; this is one of her qualities that made her so real. Sometimes Trinity’s relationship with Dan seemed a tad artificial because Dan was such a perfect fit for Trinity, but at the same time, it made the romantic part of this story all the more sweet. Trinity’s ability to dream walk never seemed fake or superficial, which is something I appreciated. Sleepless has a fantastic combination of suspenseful plot and credible characters to make an incredible story I wholly enjoyed.

Readers who liked Lisa McMann’s novel Wake are sure to enjoy Sleepless. Even if you haven’t read Wake but still like romance, action, and the supernatural, you should definitely check out this awesome story. I most definitely recommend this fast and fun read, and I hope that there will be a sequel or at least another novel by Terri Clark.

SLEEPLESS is not your everyday piece of fluff. Those picking up SLEEPLESS thinking it's a typical teen summer romance will be quite surprised. I know I was! SLEEPLESS may just keep you up all night trying to avoid your dreams!

Okay, I admit it, there is romance in this book, but that's not all that it's about. There's far more action and suspense going on beyond the attraction between Trinity and Dan.

It's the beginning of July and Trinity's best friend, Coral, is about to leave for soccer camp. It's the summer before they start college, and Coral has given Trinity an assignment for the remainder of the summer. Trinity is usually found in black. Coral tasks her with buying a BLUE dress during the summer, a promise to get out more, and to actually go out on a date. Trinity has no idea how she'll accomplish any of these, but she vows to keep her promise.

Coral leaves for camp and Trinity's mother leaves for a long-anticipated art trip to Europe. That leaves Trinity alone. And then the dreams start to come. Trinity has the unwanted media name "Dream Girl" stemming from the fact that others come to her in her dreams. A young girl, Kiri, came to her over a year ago. She asked for help, but in the end, Trinity and the cops were unable to save Kiri before it was too late. Her murderer, Rafe Stevens, was sent to a mental hospital rather than prison. Ever since she was unable to save Kiri, Trinity has tried to avoid her abilities and all reminders of the past.

But now the dreams are back, and she fears that Rafe has escaped from the hospital and is coming for her. Aided by Dan Devlin, the son of the defense lawyer that saved Rafe from prison, the two set off to find Rafe before he can find her. Rafe has developed the ability to enter other peoples' dreams and harm them in their sleep. Dan believes in her and wants to keep her safe. During the brief time they spend together, an immediate bond forms and they risk everything to finally put Rafe where he belongs.

SLEEPLESS calls to mind the Nightmare on Elm Street movie series. The action is just as fast-past and heart-pounding as any adult thriller you will encounter. I hadn't expected to have SLEEPLESS be such a pulse-pounding read, which was a really pleasant surprise. Don't get me wrong, I was looking forward to reading SLEEPLESS, thinking it would be a nice teen romance, but it was so much more than that. Now, I'm not sure I'll be able to sleep easily tonight! I'll have visions of Rafe and the harm he tried to do to Trinity and Dan.

SLEEPLESS is Ms. Clark's first novel, and she's written a real winner. I eagerly await her future endeavors.

Note to reader: There is some violence and sexual situations in this story. ( )
