After running into trouble with the law, a teenager with an attitude is sent to a boarding school with a big secret Even though it wasn't Rachel's idea to steal the car, she was happy to go along for the ride. But when her so-called friends bolt as soon as the cops show up, they leave Rachel to take the rap. In court, the judge takes pity on the Beverly Hills bad girl, and offers her a choice: thirty days in juvie, or a year at Blackthorn Academy. Rachel chooses the boarding school. After all, how bad could it be? Cut into the side of a Pennsylvania mountain, Blackthorn is weirder than Rachel could ever have imagined. The students take Tae Kwon Do instead of gym, there are guardhouses on the edge of campus, and there's a secret Top Floor that only certain students are allowed to access. Despite Blackthorn's mysteries, Rachel is starting to fit in. She likes her roommate and her classmates, and even the all-knowing headmaster, Mr. Kim. But when Mr. Kim disappears, Rachel learns a secret about Blackthorn Academy-and herself-that will change her life forever.… (más)

Live and Let Shop is the first book in a series about Rachel Buchanan. Rachel is a rich Beverly Hills teenager whose parents have better things to do than deal with her. Since her grandmother, who was the only person who seemed to care about her, died, Rachel has slowly getting into more and more trouble until she ends up in court for Grand Theft Auto. Instead of sending her to juvie, the judge decides to send Rachel to a school in Pennsylvania for troubled students. This school is like no other school that Rachel has ever known, and before long, she discovers many strange things going on that make her believe the school is much more than it seems.

I really enjoyed this story and finished it in once sitting. Rachel has a strong, sarcastic voice that made identifying with her very easy. My only complaint was how quickly the story seemed to draw to a close. I have to believe that the quick finish has more to do with the fact that there is a sequel rather than something lacking in the story. I look forward to the next installment. ( )

I totally loved this book.

I love these kinds of YA books, esp set in a boarding school. This book reminded me of "The Specialists" series by Shannon Greenland, which I also love.

The book is well written, it's exciting all the way through, the characters are all unique, the setting is perfect....I loved it and can't wait to read more from this series.

Got this thinking one or both of the granddaughters might like it, but neither seemed too interested. Looks like the start of a kick-ass new series for kids though. I'm pretty sure I read a review of it in the Unshelved newsletter, but can't find it now. So, misunderstood (not juvenile delinquent) Rachael Buchanan and her buddies from Blackthorn Academy race to save the world from the evil genius of Mithras reincarnated. ( )
