Sylvie O'Rourke, The Sound of Music devotee and born procrastinator, is about to die. Well, she thinks she is, anyway, and so attempts a last-ditch bargain with God for her life. You guys are my witnesses, she tells her sisters somewhere over Connecticut. If we get out of this plane alive, I promise to do something good with my life. Back on firm ground, Kate and Meg won't let their sister forget her promise, and with their years of practice hitting just the right chords of guilt (What kind of person lies to God? Meg wants to know), Sylvie finally caves. A teaching position at the broken-down St. Matthew's High School appears to be Sylvie's perfect opportunity to do some good, though her irreverent style gets her called down to the principal more often than her students. Can Sylvie keep her promise and make it through the year, dignity and sanity intact?… (más)

This book isn't my usual genre, obviously, as there is no more specific shelf to assign it in my book shelves. I considered making a new one, but it would be so lonely sitting there...

I had seen it on firstreads, but didn't win it. When I saw it for my Nook for only 2.99, I figured, "what the heck?"

I liked it well enough, I read through it's 700 pages in just 3 days or so. But, there were some down sides for me too. First, it wasn't super original in my opinion as I felt it borrowed heavily from Pride and Prejudice without attempting to hide it at all (P&P was discussed at length during the book, the main character is working as a High School English teacher through most of the story). Also, the situation with Evan and Ben...well, as soon as Ben told her that whole sad story sitting in the restaurant I just started yelling...which was a little mental, as I was alone. Admittedly, it didn't end up as an "exact" match to the aforementioned plot twist, but extraordinarily close. Like as close as changing a word or two in a paragraph copied off the Internet and then trying to palm it off as your own.

So, slight borrowing from a classic and plot twist thievery notwithstanding, it made me laugh in parts, I loved her relationship with her sisters and it was enjoyable enough that it was over before I realized. It was just kind of a sweet story told lightly with humor and a happy ending.

In case you're a progressive, feminist type I should warn you that the author is clearly Catholic and believes in abstinence. There is no mistaking the message. But, the book doesn't appear to be YA to me, so I'm not really sure who would still need that message by the time this book gets to them... ( )

I watched this book for quite a while before finally buying it, because I generally don't spend so much on an author I don't know. But finally I figured any book that had The Sound of Music at the heart of it must be worth at least one read, so I one-clicked it. I was so happy that I did. I loved Sylvie's struggles in front of the classroom and found her a completely relatable heroine. I always enjoy "chick lit" where the romance is secondary to the other parts of the main character's life, and this definitely filled that bill. No real inappropriate language or sex scenes, which is also refreshing in itself. I'd definitely read another book by Cheryl Cory!! ( )

I received this book for free through Goodreads in exchange for my honest review. Must've Done Something Good by Cheryl Cory was an incredible book. It was heart warming, funny, and sweet in all the right places. I really enjoyed reading this book and it has become one of my favorites. Cheryl Cory is an amazing woman, author, and person! And I would recommend this book to anyone in the mood for a sweet, romantic story that will make you happy in the end. ( )
