A typically absorbing Follett page turner, though I did not initially warm to Vandam or Elene, and thus felt no real sympathy for any of the characters. The villainous spy, Alex Wolff, is very reminiscent of the equivalent in the author's Eye of the Needle. ( )

During World War II the German spy was sent across the arid Sahara desert into Egypt. The German wanted to invade Cairo. The spy mission was to learn about the British millitary operation in Egypt. I read this book after "Eye of the Needle" which I enjoyed that book more. I rated that book 4 stars, but The Key To Rebecca 3 1/2 stars. But my favourite, and I think the best novel by Ken Follet is "The Pillars of the Earth". ( )

A spy story that boils down to a battle of wits. This book challenged my thinking on good guys and bad guys. Although the antagonist, Alex Wolf, had some unsavory personality traits, he wasn't wholly evil. The protagonist, William Vandam, was not wholly good. Both used women, but only Vandam was capable of loving a woman.

Ken Follet superiorly writes suspense. He anticipates the reader's every questions and gives you the information exactly when you need it. ( )

A Reader's Manifesto

The Key to Rebecca

Descripción del libro

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0451207793, Paperback)

Set in North Africa, summer 1942, during Rommel's campaign against the British. This is the story of Alex Wolff, master spy, who treks across the Sahara and covertly enters the plot-ridden streets of wartime Cairo. And of Major Vandam, the British officer who is on Wolff's trail, sworn to destroy him. Wolff's mission is to steal British military plans and send them to Rommel, using a code whose key is buried in the pages of Daphne du Maurier's novel Rebecca. As Rommel's troops come closer to victory, Vandam edges closer to Wolff and the crucial key. There are incredible chase scenes: a motorcycle hurtling through blacked-out Cairo; the flash of a knife, a gush of hot blood, and the fleeting shadow of an escaping assassin; a harrowing race against death and a speeding train. Follett builds tension and suspense to a screaming pitch as he follows the adversaries across the internal desert to a confrontation as startling as it is explosive.
