First published in 1992, this volume initiated a new conception of Roman coinage, presenting for the first time an authoritative and systematic account of the coins minted in the provinces of the empire and showing how they could be regarded as an integral part of the coinage minted under the Roman emperors. The aim of the book is to give a complete picture of the material, thereby not only meeting the needs of numismatists but also providing an essential reference for historians, epigraphists, archaeologists and other students of the Roman empire. Covering the century from the death of Julius Caesar in 44 BC to that of the emperor Vitellius in AD 69, this volume examines the coinage of more than 400 cities throughout the Roman empire, organized geographically from Spain and Africa in the west to Syria and Egypt in the east. Part I contains the Introduction and Catalogue, while Part II illustrates every major issue listed.
