Brookgreen Gardens, celebrating its fiftieth anniversary in 1981, stunningly displays our nation's most comprehensive collections of American sculpture. More than 350 outstanding works, dating from as early as 1860, are beautifully sited among Brooksgreen's native flowering shrubs, and ancient moss-draped trees, in shaded bowers, on broad lawns and reflected in still ponds. For this book, more that fifty representative American sculptures were especially photographed in their breathtaking setting, reminding museum-goers that most sculpture originally was created to be seen in sunlight among natural surroundings. This selection was made to show, both in terms of key movements and artists, the variety and importance of Brookgreen's collection, which ranges from the classicism of Daniel Chester French and Augustus Saint-Gaudens to the eclectisism of Paul Manship and Gaston Lachaise, from the spectacular conceptions of Gutzon Borglum, creator of the gigantic presidential heads on Mt. Rushmore, to the more intimate works of Jo Davidson, the most famous portrait sculptor of his generation. --From front cover flap.… (más)
