(  ) Litrvixen | Jun 23, 2022 | 3 Stars Much darker and grittier than my usual urban fantasy fare. The world building is original and compelling, the characters intense and the story engrossing. Nevertheless, I cannot say that I enjoyed the book - it was simply too strange. The story revolves around Dante, a vampire/rock star, and the obsession that every single character, whether good or evil, has with him. As someone who finds this type of hero-worship anathema, it was difficult to identify with any of the characters not even the heroine, a no-nonsense FBI agent (my favorite type). The serial killer plot is gripping at first. Unfortunately, it is soon put on the back-burner in favor of the mythology and the above mentioned preoccupation with Dante and his tortured past. While the former is well-develeoped and fascinating, the latter is undermined by Dante's amnesia, which results in the reader becoming distanced from the horrific events of his childhood. As a fan of the gothic and the macabre, the book has potential. However, even I found it a tad too sadistic and disturbing. Not sure if I will continue with the series.
