My folks have been recommending this writer and now I understand why they're crazy about her. Jane Kirkpatrick has a way with a good story! This book is set on the Deschutes River in Oregon - part of my home state I am not so familiar with. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed her work and look forward to reading her other works.

I appreciate her careful research and the way she blended fact and fiction. I also appreciated her recounting what was true and what was fiction at the end of the book - not that I'll recall it all later. But I do wonder when I read historical fiction, where does the history end and the fiction pick up? So her explanation was quite welcome. ( )

An interesting book of the mid 1800's of life in the Oregon territory by the Columbia River and the Deschutes. I found it difficult to connect with the characters, but found the story well told. I liked learning about life in the west during and after the civil war. ( )

I listened to this book and really enjoyed it. The story is based on real people and events in the settlement of Oregon. I like the fact that author Jane Kirpatrick does indepth research for each of her historical novels. This one is exceptional. ( )

Like the slow rising of the river after an early snow melt in the mountains, he seeped into my life, unhurried, almost without notice, until the strength and breadth of him covered everything that had once been familiar, made it different, new over old.
