Into the Wild, Jon Krakau ... I'm hoping to get to Into Thin Air in 2010. It's been languishing on my nightstand for about five years. It actually fits into two different categories for my 1010 challenge so I'm thinking I'll actually read it :) Hey, Milda! That book looks good.
For cold places, though, have you ever read Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer? It's an exciting read about an ascent gone wrong. Just reading about the author's scaling Mount Everest made my husband short of breath. :)

I'm also about to start American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis (why the hell doesn't this touchstone work? blah.), which ... ... subject, but I have read several books on the Everest tragedy a few years ago. Among the books read were Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air, Matt Dickinson's The Other Side of Everest, and Anatoli Boukreev's The Climb.

Donna- I haven't read Krakauer's very first book but I loved his others and my favorite has to be Into Thin Air. An amazing roller-coaster of a book! I was emotionally and physically drained after reading sections of that one! For W I read The Wall by Jeff Long, a thriller about climbing. Ever since Into Thin Air I, like many, many others, have been fascinated by mountain climbing. Why on earth would anyone voluntarily do this? is pretty much the root of my interest, and memoirs and true tales just ... ... my wish list. :)
There already were two books by Jon Krakauer that both my husband and I read and loved. They Were Into Thin Air and Into the Wild. (I just noticed both books started with the word "into". Weird!) Into Thin Air has got to get the award for "Getting the most people to read a book about something they would NEVER want to do themselves." Fabulous writing! ... I had the wrong touchstone, but now I've added Women of the Silk to my TBR list! And, I agree, Alive was good but Into Thin Air was great, one of my top 50 reads of my life, to date. ... about. Alive I thought was good. Into Thin Air was perhaps a once in a lifetime true story for me. I can't imagine that I will ever read another that takes me to "that place". I was in awe by the time I ... Also been meaning to read "Into thin Air" too, after my mountain mishaps last year I'm sure a lot of it would hit home :-) Yes, Garp83 -- I've been a Krakauer fan long, long before Into Thin Air. If you haven't already read it, I heartily recommend Eiger Dreams! I think I like it even better than Into Thin Air. Under the Banner of Heaven is an important, thoughtful book -- I still think of it often.

The coldest (category #4) book I can think of was Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. This is about the author's ascent on Mount Everest. My husband said he was getting short of breath just from reading the book! :)

If you like Into Thin Air, you might give The Climb by Anatoli Boukreev a try. Boukreev is a professional mountain climber and was one of those involved in the rescue attempt of the people trapped on Everest detailed by Karakauer in Into Thin Air. Into the Wild drove me crazy. I read it after Into Thin Air and something else by Krakauer and I like his work. But the young man was just so out of touch with reality that it really irritated me. At the time, my son was also finishing his Eagle requirements (and as the daughter of an Eagle), ... ... that.

I absolutely loved this book. Krakauer does an excellent job of recounting the tragedy without being dull in the least. He does an admirable job of reporting the events fairly and presenting his own shortcomings frankly and taking ... ... didn't ask for advice, but here I am anyway.
