Pros: easy to follow plot, compulsive story, interesting characters
Cons: mediocre writing, insane suspension of disbelief required, unexplained second POV
Not quite a hit, but enjoyable enough to not be a total miss. ( )

Gothic thriller fails to deliver.

Meg’s sister dies at an expensive and exclusive rehab center. She knows her sister did not commit suicide and so she decides to admit herself to find out what really happened.

I was looking for an atmospheric read after looking at the blurb for this book. The isolated place in the PNW surrounded by fog — and the hook for me was the medical aspect. A rehabilitation center for the rich and famous. Unfortunately, having some actual knowledge about addiction and treatment/therapy meant that I was going to nit pick everything. Yeah, no.

The characters were all such a turn off and the plot just limped along with one completely unrealistic thing happening after another. The twists? Took all my ability to suspend disbelief. I can see by other reviews that many really enjoyed this but it definitely was not appealing to me. It was very slow paced with even the short chapters not making it move along.

Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks for the e-book ARC to read and review. ( )

Meg catches cheaters at a casino in LA. She has a big problem though. Meg is addicted to Oxycodone and alcohol. And this is a tough combination. When Meg discovers her famous actress sister, Haley, has committed suicide in a clinic rehab, Meg knows this is a lie. She checks herself into this clinic and discovers more than she bargained for.

There are two narrators, Meg and Cara. Cara is a worker at the clinic. And she is a bit naïve and a bit dense. She just didn’t fit what I would expect this clinic to hire. And when you read this, you will see what I am talking about.

But, I have to say the intensity in this book is spot on. And I didn’t know who to believe or what to believe. This was very close to a 5 star read for me. The only reason it is not is the narrator, Cara. But, I loved all the twists and turns…and the ending! Don’t miss it!

Need a good thriller with unique twists…THIS IS IT! Grab your copy today.

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review. ( )

A doctor with a criminal history treats relapsed addicts with questionable methods under the guise of a top notch rehab clinic.

Meg Banks is a poker player who uses her skills to catch unscrupulous card players. Her relationship with her sister is strained since neither one had a loving mother relationship. Meg enters the same rehab clinic after learning about her sisters death while attempting to kick her drug addiction. Meg, who is also detoxing off of oxycontin, is convinced her sister is alive after receiving warning notes to leave the clinic written in Haleys handwriting.

I enjoyed this book immensely as it has readers wondering if Haley is truly alive in the clinic. Clara questions the role of the clinic in rehabilitating the wealthy patients from their addictions. As the police investigates the clinic, Cara must decide if she will assist the police or be an accomplice to the clinic's sinister connections. Cate Quinn is a talented author who uses her personal experience of rehab to bring a page turning story to readers. A highly recommended read for fans of thrilling novels that will have you wondering if Haley is alive to the very end. ( )

"Every part of my body turns to ice. Haley’s handwriting. Or a good imitation of it. I read, the letters swimming. “Leave now, Meggy. Before it’s too late. Love Haley.”"

Meg and Haley are sisters with a complicated relationship. Haley is a famous actress and Meg is addicted to drugs and works at a casino. Haley dies mysteriously at a rehab facility in the Pacific Northwest, promoting Meg to check herself in as a patient to find out what happened.

This is really well plotted and the short chapters helped make it feel really fast paced. At the part of this story is the complicated and strained relationship between the two sisters. This is a great psychological thriller.

Thank you Sourcebooks Landmark for giving me an advanced review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. ( )
