Fiction. Literature. HTML:From #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Weiner comes a warmhearted and empowering new novel about love, family, friendship, secrets, and a life-changing journey.
Thirty-three-year-old Abby Stern has made it to a happy place. True, she still has gig jobs instead of a career, and the apartment where she's lived since college still looks like she's just moved in. But she's got good friends, her bike, and her bicycling club in Philadelphia. She's at peace with her plus-size body??at least, most of the time??and she's on track to marry Mark Medoff, her childhood summer sweetheart, a man she met at the weight-loss camp that her perpetually dieting mother forced her to attend. Fifteen years after her final summer at Camp Golden Hills, when Abby reconnects with a half-his-size Mark, it feels like the happy ending she's always wanted.

Yet Abby can't escape the feeling that something isn't right...or the memories of one thrilling night she spent with a man named Sebastian two years previously. When Abby gets a last-minute invitation to lead a cycling trip from NYC to Niagara Falls, she's happy to have time away from Mark, a chance to reflect and make up her mind.

But things get complicated fast. First, Abby spots a familiar face in the group??Sebastian, the one-night stand she thought she'd never see again. Sebastian is a serial dater who lives a hundred miles away. In spite of their undeniable chemistry, Abby is determined to keep her distance. Then there's a surprise last-minute addition to the trip: her mother, Eileen, the woman Abby blames for a lifetime of body shaming and insecurities she's still trying to undo.

Over two weeks and more than seven hundred miles, strangers become friends, hidden truths come to light, a teenage girl with a secret unites the riders in unexpected ways...and Abby is forced to reconsider everything she believes about herself, her mother, and the na

Abby Stern is on a girls weekend in NYC when she meets Sebastian and has an unforgettable night with him. But, she leaves before he awakens and she heads back to Philadelphia and begins a relationship with her childhood sweetheart, Mark. She met Mark at "fat camp" and he was her first love. They reconnect as adults, and Mark is now thin, Abby is plus-size. She is self-conscious about it, but along with her friend Lizzie, enjoys cycling. She is asked to lead a bike tour to Niagara Falls, and is shocked to see Sebastian on the trip (2 years after their night). She wants to avoid him, but finds herself falling for him, and questioning her relationship with Mark.
Cute rom-com with a heroine who has some issues, and is learning to love herself. Sebastian also needs to mature, and the ending leaves things open, but hopeful.
I enjoyed it. It also addresses some other issues, e.g. teen pregnancy. ( )

Another book set in Philly and surrounds.

Desperately trying to catch up on books I've read in 2023, before it turns 2024. Don't think I'll make it. Full review (hopefully) to come later. ( )

Thanks to NetGalley for the arc. This is inspiring me to get a bike again to have so I can go for rides whenever I want. This book had just the right amount about Covid in it without focusing the whole book on it. ( )

I have only read one other Jennifer Weiner book, Mrs. Everything, that I thought was well written and interesting. This book, however, although well written, has a very predictable plot and is full of cliches.

Abby was overweight as a child and still is as an adult. Her mother focuses on Abby's weight, sending her as a young teenager to a weight loss camp. There she made an immediate connection with Mark, another camper, who was kind, considerate and encouraging. They serendipitously meet after college, and Mark is now trim and toned after gastric bypass surgery. Despite having little in common, he becomes her attentive boyfriend. During a bachelorette weekend, Abby meets Sebastian. Their one-night stand is memorable, but she feels that he is "out of her league" and tries to forget him. When she agrees to lead a two week bike trek in New York, he appears as part of the group she is leading with his best friend.

During this trip, relationships and resolutions are numerous, both for Abby and other members of the group. Although this wasn't the book for me, there are probably many who would enjoy it. ( )

I like books about fat girls. I loved the whole bicycle trip. I enjoyed the relationships. Some interesting issues were discussed so this was not just a fun read. ( )
