Shari Lapena - Everyone Here is Lying: This was actually better than I expected of what seemed like a “buy at an airport” type of book. #cursorybookreviews #cursoryreviews ( )

This book was tightly written, with chapters from all different vantage points and more and more secrets uncovered as the plot progressed. I was worried that this book was going to be the overused trope of the cheating husband, unhappy wife, missing child, etc., but there were quite a few satisfyingly unexpected twists throwing everything into suspicion. And when the reader is finally privy to the "who" of the whodunit, you realize that the most evil of evils is sometimes where you least expect to find it. ( )

They don't speak as William walks her to her car parked behind the motel; they never leave their cars out front, where they might be recognized. No one will ever know they were hear. At least, this is what they tell themselves, what they have told themselves every time over the last few months as their affair kindled, burned brightly. But now it has been abruptly snuffed out. By her. He didn't see it coming.

Is everyone here really lying? Who is and who isn't? This latest domestic suspense novel from Shari Lapena is just as gripping and entertaining as my favorite book of hers, The Couple Next Door.

Father, husband, and adulterer William Wooler comes home in a foul mood one afternoon after being dumped by his mistress, and he has an altercation with his 9-year old daughter who's supposed to be in school. Then suddenly, she's gone. Vanished. And it seems every neighbor on her block has an interesting story to tell about what they think happened to Avery.

This book is a fascinating missing persons mystery that I couldn't put down. Some of the characters were awful, some were easy to empathize with, but they all added an intriguing voice to the story. I enjoyed how the multiple POVs changed often and flowed seamlessly into each other, which kept the pace moving quickly.

I loved how the story wrapped up, but at the same time I thought the ending was too abrupt. When I reached the last page, I said "Nooooo!" The mystery has a satisfying resolution, but I just wanted more. I would definitely recommend this dark domestic thriller to fans of the genre. Well done! ( )

First I will say, I love the cover. I love treehouses, and the colours of the background, gorgeous! That being said, it's an odd choice for a cover, since the treehouse barely plays a part in the story at all. Wouldn't a motel with a dumpster near it have been more appropriate?

Anyway! I enjoyed this story. It was an interesting complex web of lies, betrayals and relationships. The first 70% of the book felt a little slow to me. It was mostly "what if this" and "what if that". There were also some minor plot holes and things that were unrealistic, but they can be easily overlooked for the sake of the story.

Overall, a good read! ( )
