Liz Baker and her three roommates work at The Nether Fields, a queer magazine in New York that's on the verge of shutting down-until it's bought at the last minute by two wealthy lesbians. Even though Liz is eager to leave listicles behind for more meaningful writing, she knows that she's lucky to still have a paycheck. But it's hard to feel grateful with minority investor Daria Fitzgerald slashing budgets, cancelling bagel Fridays, and password protecting the color printer to prevent "frivolous use." When Liz overhears Daria scoffing at her articles, she knows that it's only a matter of her time before her impulsive mouth tells Daria off and gets herself fired. But as Liz and Daria get thrown together more and more, Liz starts to see a softer side to Daria-she's funny, surprisingly helpful, and actually seems to like that Liz's gender presentation varies between butch and femme. Even as the evidence that Liz can't trust Daria piles up, it starts getting harder and harder to keep hating Daria-and harder and harder to resist her.… (más)

I really really want to finish this, and I keep borrowing it and inching forward. I think it’s possible the characters are interesting. But where’s the power, the emotional catch, in the romance?

...Compared with the MM romance which is filled with backbreaking emotional charge. Even frothy romantic comedies like Red White and Royal Blue which everyone is currently watching on Amazon has some sentimental heart-throbby depth.

I need some recommendations for some good FF romance.

(Later) I pushed on with this and it did get better, the way Liz is pulled in many directions in the midst of work and personal twists and turns.

Liz is also puzzling her way through her identity, an identity that will fit true to her, will feel comfortable ... an example of one of the many contemporary twists Camile Kellogg gives the Elizabeth of Pride and Prejudice she uses as the inspiration, or the model for her novel. ( )

A very fast and enjoyable read.
It mostly followed the plot points set by pride and prejudice but took some much needed creative liberty to bring it into the 21st century and make it make sense here.
Liz seemed very quickly aware that she was attracted to Daria, which is a deviation from the original but fit better for these characters. The book also drove home much more that both Liz and Daria had to change to make a relationship work, not just one of them.

There was quite a few times where they talked about gender expression through clothing which wasn't relatable to me lersonally but I could imagine people loving this since it isn't discussed a lot in other queer literature I've read so far.

If I remember correctly there were exactly three sentences by men throughout the entire book and only one of them was named. I'm not going to complain about it since there's still more than enough media that doesn't pass bechdel ( )
