And the section on owls in our culture, including some of the beliefs that persist to this day. The book is more of an overview than a deep dive into the subject -- perfect for general readers. But watch out...some of the pictures are creepy! This is a great book.It is really more of a light survey than a deep dive. The author explores aspects of owl physiology and behavior while relating experiences with different researchers or conservationists along the way. Particularly enjoyed the section dealing with how human perceptions and superstitions about the bird effect it’s status in different cultures. A thorough review of the natural history of owls, which hold a unique place in ornithology as the only bird with forward facing eyes. They are found on every continent except the Antarctic in an astounding variety of species. The author does a thorough survey on the current research on owls, which are extremely difficult to study since they are mostly active at night and rely on stealth and camouflage for safety and successful hunting. There are chapters on habitat, breeding behavior, diet, general behavior, and the threats presented by climate and habitat change. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

Owls know many, many things about being owls. Jennifer Ackerman knows many things about them. I enjoyed this book. How could I not? As Ackerman says in her preface, owls are perennial and universal favorites.
This book is full of information, but it never devolves into a list of endless factoids. Ackerman writes with a balance of scientific data and personal anecdotes. I had a kindle copy of this book and also listened to a bit of the audio which Ackerman reads herself. I preferred the text with its pictures of different owl species. However, Ackerman does some great owl imitations on the audiobook. Beginning to end, both editions of the book kept my interest. ( )
