"This exhibition catalogue, edited by the exhibition co-curators Julia Krueger and Timothy Long, highlights the five decade career of Regina, Saskatchewan artist Victor Cicansky with a special focus on his relationship to gardens as subject and metaphor. Featuring illustrations of over 100 sculptures in ceramics and bronze, the catalogue traces his development from the Funk iconoclasm of his student days at the University of California, Davis, to his participation in the Regina Clay movement of the 1970s, to his ongoing celebration of shovel to plate gardening. Six essays and an interview with the artist illuminate the cultural milieu of his Romanian-immigrant upbringing in Regina, his participation in Funk and Nut Art networks of the 1960s and 1970s, the complex cultural significance of his signature ceramic sculptures of Mason jars, his unearthing of a politics of place and ecology through garden imagery, his complex use of craft discourses, his negotiation of "folk" imagery in public murals, and his play-oriented philosophy of art education. The catalogue is fully illustrated with a chronology, bibliography and French translations of the main texts. The catalogue accompanies an exhibition that is organized and circulated by the MacKenzie Art Gallery (Regina, SK) where it was displayed from June 8 to October 23, 2019, and which will tour to the Confederation Centre Art Gallery (Charolottetown, PE) from January 25 to April 26, 2020, and to Glenbow (Calgary, AB) from June 20 to September 20, 2020."--… (más)
