"Haelewise has always lived under the shadow of her mother, Hedda-a woman who will do anything to keep her daughter protected. For with her strange black eyes and even stranger fainting spells, Haelewise is shunned by her village, and her only solace lies in the stories her mother tells of child-stealing witches, of princes in wolf-skins, of an ancient tower cloaked in mist, where women will find shelter if they are brave enough to seek it. Then, Hedda dies, and Haelewise is left unmoored. With nothing left for her in her village, she sets out to find the legendary tower her mother used to speak of-a place called Gothel, where Haelewise meets a wise woman willing to take her under her wing. But Haelewise is not the only woman to seek refuge at Gothel. It's also a haven for a girl named Rika, who carries with her a secret the Church strives to keep hidden. A secret that people will kill to uncover..."--… (más)

I am a sucker for retellings, I'll read them all, good or bad. On rare occasion there is a retelling jumps that out at me at something so unique and moving as this book was. I loved every page of it. It reminded me of all the best parts of a Naomi Novik book while still maintaining an original voice. Enchanting, I want more. ( )

Rich retelling of the origin of Gothel from Rapunzel, but the frame story, while immensely fascinating and atmospheric, was not needed. ( )

Thank you to NetGalley and Redhook Books for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars. It kept me engaged but didn't totally suck me in. I would have liked more details, and sometimes events felt like they moved really quickly. I think that may have been trying to keep it more in line with a fairytale type read but it made it hard for me to be really invested. Overall I thought it was interesting and enjoyable. ( )

Delightful story of empowerment told with the conventions of fairy tales. ( )

excellent, well-researched prequel to the fairy tale Rapunzel, set in the German Black Forest in the 12th century, and describing the incompatibility of medieval religious thinking and treatment of women with the fading pagan traditions being suppressed. the social history of the period is beautifully detailed, and the characters are quite interesting. the actual fairy tale and its attendant magic subtly winds itself around this solid historical center.
