Although the text was simple and poetic, I learned about 11 different cultures in less than one minute. At the end of the book, there is a teacher and her eighteen students, each taking turns sharing about the different cultural gifts they received. I thought the other's use of "gifts" was both symbolic yet concrete. Each culture has something to "give" and therefore it is a gift. I think this book would perfect for the beginning of the year to make sure everyone feels welcome in the classroom and that all cultures are appreciated. This book can be read from kindergarten to even high school. I also thought the glossary in the back of the different definitions of the cultural gifts AND the pronunciations to be extremely helpful and accommodating. The book describes the main characteristics of every person from different parts of the world such as race, color or even religion. Children can learn more about diversity and cultures of other people thanks to this book which also provide some languages spoken in those places. The illustrations of each gift and the country those gifts come from are so accurate and appropriate. The story was written in the form of rhyming words, similar to a poem, but not really. Overall, I enjoyed this book, and I find it to be a great resource to have in a classroom. ( )
