With its invasion of South-East Asia at the end of 1941, Japan seized control of Burma, Thailand and Vietnam, the three major rice exporting countries in the world. Nevertheless, territories in the region experienced severe food shortages under Japanese occupation, largely because Japan was unable to transport rice to food deficit areas. The articles in this volume examine rice cultivation and the difficulties of transportation in the major producing areas, and the effects of food shortages in Sarawak, Java, the Philippines, Malaya and Vietnam.
