I hungered to be seen. There were three things I knew about Capo Macchiavello: He was gorgeous. He was reclusive. He was considered one of New York's most savage animals. And he wanted me as his wife. A simple arrangement - you do for me, I do for you. Nothing owed, no expectations. Except for one: never leave. Life was never that simple, though. By the age of twenty-one, I was parentless, jobless, and homeless, and I had come to learn the hard way that nothing was ever free. Even kindness comes with strings. Capo might've been the only man to ever see me, but I had made a vow to myself: I would never owe anyone anything. Most of all, the man I called boss. I killed to stay hidden. Mariposa Flores thought she owed nothing to no one, but she owed everything...to me, the ghost the world had once called The Machiavellian Prince of New York. Machiavellian is the first of three books set in the savage world of the Gangsters of New York series.… (más)

4.5 for me! I really enjoyed this! ( )

This book had me gripped through the initial pages, despite being in pain post-surgery, I powered through the first 40ish pages cause it was THAT good. Unfortunately, the author couldn't match her own perfection in the plot and story line that followed. At one point it became a drag, or I don't know, blame it on my meds. Also, this isn't an easy book to read in one go. Nope, Corte doesn't write stories that don't hit the "cyclone intensity" level. Having said that, have read better books by the author and continues to remain one of my faves. ( )

Wow

My mind is blown. I'm asking myself is I have been living under a rock and didn't know it because that is the only possible way that I could have missed ever hearing about this author. I saw the cover of this on my kindle when it was showing me books that I might be interested in based on my reading preferences. Between the cover and the title I instantly needed to know more. The blurb sucked me in further and decided to take a risk on an unknown author. Little did I know, it would be worth the risk.

This book was exceptional. The cadence and stylistic choices this author used was like butter. I had to keep pausing how with all the authors I've read or the thousands of books that I've read in my lifetime, how had I missed crossing paths with her.

The characters were rich, full of life, and had pretty crappy hands delivered to them. There was magic watching them discover each other. The secrets and how they were tired together?!?! Yeah, that was magic too. The epilogue that fills in an additional layer was like getting a Christmas present early. The secondary characters were also exceptional and definitely need to have their stories told. The best part though as wonderful as the entire story was, came from a book about a wolf and a butterfly from Nonno. I will remember that love and treasure forever.

I will definitely be looking for more from this author. One of my favorite discoveries of 2020. ( )

This wasn't for me.
It's confusing and a bit messy.
The idea is good but I found the heroine very annoying.
She says "Fucka me" all the time for a start.
There were so many people and names.
The author gives a chart at the start to the book to see who is who and explain terms that are used.
I nearly gave up then, I just wanted to read the book and although it can be confusing without a chart it felt the book was never going to start.
It seems to jump all over the place and my pet peeve, internal monologue from the heroine at times.
No intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine but at the start the Hero is with his fiance and a few things are mentioned about their sex life.
