The book looks at the writings of eight Argentine leftist political intellectuals who engaged, in the decade under study, with the ideas of cultural and economic dependency and national identity, topics usually imagined as having interested only nationalist thinkers. The first two chapters look at how Marxism historically dealt with the idea of the nation, and then what happened during the decade under study that brought this debate to the fore. The second section of the book analyses these eight intellectuals' work by focusing on four common themes: the way in which they constructed a revised version of national history, how they understood imperialism, Latin American unity, and the "people."
